Job Title: Managing Editor for WFYI’s Side Effects Public Media 

Classification: Full Time, Exempt

Reporting Relationship: Reports directly to WFYI News Director 

All WFYI news teams report on the public systems meant to serve everyone -- successes, failures, inequities and efforts to mend them. Our Managing Health Editor will lead WFYI’s Side Effects Public Media, a multi-state regional collaboration including seven public radio stations, headquartered at WFYI. The position manages a team of reporters who produce outstanding enterprise journalism that brings to light important public health issues in Indiana and the central Midwest. WFYI is Central Indiana’s leading non-commercial media outlet and NPR and PBS station; it has founded, supported and worked with award-winning local, statewide, regional and national journalism and community engagement initiatives. 

Major Responsibilities

• Edit, lead and train reporters to provide multiplatform, enterprise and daily reporting for public media stations and republication in newspapers. 

• Develop coverage plans with the education editor, station news director and managing editor of Indiana’s statewide news collaboration.  

• Work with the Health/Education Digital Editor to guide visual reporting for digital stories, maintain consistent AP style and use journalistically- consistent and engaging social media practices.  

• Direct editorial choices using community engagement to collect input from broad audiences, help us report for everyone, make complicated public policies easy to understand, and help people understand perspectives that are not their own.  

• Conduct oneself with sensitivity toward building strong relationships, provide outstanding leadership and develop talent on the team. 

• Work with the News Project Manager to ensure budgets, deliverables, and funder reporting are timely and accurate, and to contribute language and ideas for promotional and fundraising efforts. 

• Strategize with the WFYI News Director to build, assess and refine the broader journalism effort at the station – that includes an education reporting team, a statewide news collaboration (IPB News), and the station’s emerging government, business and policy team.  

• Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with NPR News editors and national show editors and pitches stories to those outlets. 

• Maintain strong relationships with station partner newsroom managers. 

• Works occasional, scheduled, shifted work weeks to cover holidays and weekends: 4/year. 

• Edits for breaking news as needed. 

Qualifications 

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or equivalent work experience required. 

• Expertise in public health, health policy, or social or health sciences preferred. 

• A minimum of five years in progressively responsible journalistic or editorial leadership roles – including experience editing and producing audio stories and writing and editing news articles for print/web publication. 

• Experience in coaching and leading teams to report through lenses of equity and solutions. 

• Experience with social media platforms. 

• Experience with community engagement-fueled journalism. 

• Ability to excel in a team environment with a high level of personal motivation. 

• A passion for WFYI’s public media mission.
