JOB SUMMARY / POSITION PURPOSE 

The Broadcast and Technology Technician position provides essential hands-on technical expertise and judgment to ensure WFYI’s on-air and production operations remain reliable, connected, and broadcast-ready. 

This position’s scope of work includes supporting WFYI studios, equipment rooms, and remote transmitter sites. Travel to multiple locations using company vehicles will be required to successfully fulfill job expectations. 

This position is accountable for: 

  • High-quality, timely decision-making and is expected to exercise discretion and independent judgment that is both accurate and consistent in application when used to evaluate options, set priorities, and make recommendations that affect broadcast continuity, technology risk, and operational effectiveness. 

  • Sustaining reliable broadcast and technology operations by coordinating operational standards, change management, and service delivery across studios, servers, encoding and streaming systems, storage platforms, and IP networks. 

  • Supporting system upgrades and disaster-recovery readiness and mitigates broadcast and technology risk through proactive planning, documentation, and timely technical response.  

  • Providing organization-wide technology support either directly or in partnership with WFYI’s technology vendors. 

  • Preparation and maintenance of  clear technical documentation, close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including coordination with external vendors to support ongoing operations and technology initiatives.

WORK LOCATION, TRAVEL AND SCHEDULING 

This position’s work location will be primarily at WFYI’s main office in Indianapolis, Indiana. 

Travel using WFYI vehicles to support multiple locations will be required from time to time. 

This position’s schedules will vary based on operational needs. WFYI’s normal business hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Eastern. Evening and weekend work will be required as needed to support broadcast operations and avoid disruption during peak audience hours. 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience as below. 

Required: 

  • 5+ years of experience in a similar hands-on technical systems/support/engineering role. 

Highly Desirable: 

  • Experience with public radio and television systems and non-commercial broadcasting. 

  • Associate Degree in Engineering or similar field. 

LICENSE AND INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have and maintain a valid driver’s license, a satisfactory motor vehicle record and WFYI’s insurance requirements to drive WFYI vehicles.
