The News Content Intern will learn to create digital content and curate the daily news in support of local journalism and online community engagement. This is an opportunity to sharpen your skills as a journalist, produce material for our website, and build professional social media experience, train with reporters in the field and produce some broadcast and digital stories.

The WFYI internship program provides participants with robust experiences to use their existing skills and to add new skills to their portfolios. Internships are available throughout the organization and offer additional opportunities for exploration and access to other departments beyond the assignment, as well as professional development. Interns will participate in staff meetings, local and national training webinars and workshops, and will have access to conversations with station governing board members and community partners. WFYI will also adhere to internship requirements set by the student's college or university presented by the applicant.
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role, an individual will learn to perform the functions listed below.

  • Monitor wire services, press releases, etc. for material that can be used to create content for the website throughout the day.
  • Pitch story ideas and do original reporting.
  • Create multimedia and interactive content using video, still photography, Data Wrapper, StoryMap, Timeline, Juxtapose, Soundcite, etc.
  • Assist with updates to social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) throughout the day.
  • The Digital News Intern may be asked to assist with breaking news events outside the regular schedule.
     

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Spend time in other areas/departments to learn how the organization functions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience

  • Required
    • Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university
    • Must be a college junior or senior majoring in journalism, communications, or related field.
    • Strong grammar skills and knowledge of AP Style.
    • Demonstrated ability to create engaging social media posts.
    • Excellent attention to detail; strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work and produce under deadline.
    • Strong journalism ethics.
    • Ability to work within a team.
 
  • Highly Desirable
    • Some experience with HTML, CSS, Java script, etc.
    • Photography and photo editing skills.
    • Videography and video editing skills.
    • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite.
