POSITION PURPOSE

The Reporter and Newscaster, News will be part of our mission to find more ways to engage the community and serve more audiences. This role requires an experienced journalist who is able to gather community input and curate, write, edit, and deliver local broadcast and digital newscasts for publication in the national NPR news magazines and on multiple digital platforms. Reporting will include daily stories of high interest and impact in Central Indiana, moments of success and joy that define local life here, and news-you-can-use that responds to audience questions and needs determined through community engagement. The priority focus is on issues that the community defines as election-related and/or intersections of personal life and public policy.


This position requires in-person work at our Indianapolis studios each afternoon, Monday through Friday. Field reporting work and/or community engagement will be required in the mornings.

Essential functions

  • Value, contribute to, and sustain WFYI’s commitment to representing the rich diversity that is our community and amplifying the stories that represent the experiences of all.
  • Use clear and concise writing and editing.
  • Find and report daily stories, in-depth explainers and news-you-can-use.
  • Engage with community listening on a weekly basis and work with the managing editor in addition to the community engagement and news teams to contribute that input into editorial perspectives.
  • Keep up with local, statewide and national news and cultivate expertise and sources in the local communities we serve.
  • Record and produce local afternoon newscasts, for radio and digital distribution.
  • Take part in special reporting projects, breaking news and other duties as assigned.
  • Schedule flexibility (some evening, weekend, breaking news, and holiday work).

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience unless otherwise noted below.

 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism or equivalent newsroom experience required.
  • Broadcast experience.
  • Experience reporting intentionally for multiple platforms. 
  • Knowledge of AP style.
  • Ability to work simultaneously on short and long-term projects.
  • Ability to excel in a team environment with a high level of personal motivation.
  • Candidates must provide work samples.

Preferred:

  • Audio and video recording, editing and studio production experience.
  • Experience with community engagement.
  • Three or more years of reporting experience.
  • Previous work in both broadcast and digital news reporting.
  • Experience reporting community engagement journalism.
  • Previous work in collaborations.
