All WFYI and WBAA community engagement-based journalism initiatives report on public policies meant to serve everyone: where they succeed, where they fail and efforts to fix them. This Managing Editor will lead our health reporters and a multi-state regional collaboration, headquartered at WFYI. All our journalists report locally, statewide, regionally and nationally.
Reporting is multi platform, in-depth, investigative and daily. The editor leads a team to deliver investigations, data reporting, in-depth continuing coverage, long-form interviews for our daily podcast, daily coverage and video reels for social media. They will be one of four editors, stationed at WFYI, on our editorial leadership team and report to the WFYI News Director.
WFYI and WBAA are two of Indiana's leading non-commercial media outlets and share one newsroom. That newsroom is the home of notable, award-winning local, statewide, regional and national journalism and community engagement initiatives. It provides news to all audiences, without a paywall, and it partners and shares content with other publications – including all public media newsrooms in Indiana, the Indianapolis Recorder, the Associate Press, the Indianapolis Business Journal and ChalkBeat Indiana.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Manage our health team: They will ensure our health reporters produce impactful journalism, know their assignments and priorities, meet deadlines and output goals, grow reporting skills and knowledge of public health issues.
- Ensure all news content is accurate, fair, balanced, and adheres to ethical journalism standards and edit stories for clarity, accuracy, and style, ensuring they meet the organization’s editorial guidelines.
- Edit for our station teams and for the Midwest health reporting collaboration Side Effects Public Media: lead weekly team meetings, plan community engagement listening initiatives, edit all work for regional distribution, work with station partner leaders and regional collaborators, work on national projects with KFF and NPR.
- Direct editorial choices using community engagement to collect input from broad audiences, help us report for everyone, make complicated public policies easy to understand, and help people understand perspectives that are not their own.
- Collaborate closely with our Managing Editor for digital news to develop deliverables tailored for digital audiences.
- Work daily with the editorial team to develop breaking news and in-depth coverage plans, newsroom goals and audience impact strategies.
- Collaborate with and support Indiana's statewide news team, Indiana Public Broadcasting.
- As a team leader for the stations: Conduct oneself with sensitivity toward building strong relationships within the team and across departments. Assume best intentions from coworkers.
- Work occasionally, scheduled, shifted work weeks to cover high-interest news and breaking news at night and on holidays and weekends.
- Work as requested with the News Director to ensure budgets, deliverables, and funder reports are timely and accurate.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience unless otherwise noted below.
Required:
- A minimum of five years in progressively responsible journalistic or editorial leadership roles, including management experience.
- Investigative journalism experience.
- Experience editing and leading multiple reporters.
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism or equivalent work experience required.
- A year+ experience as a multiplatform reporter or editor.
Preferred:
- Investigative editing experience.
- Reported daily and in-depth multiplatform journalism, including video.
- A year+ experience in community engagement journalism.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Required:
- Excellent communication skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated proficiency in all facets of online content production, including writing and AP Style, audio and video production, and photography and photo editing.
- Audio recording, editing and production skills.
Preferred:
- Demonstrated knowledge of health policy.
- Management training.
- Demonstrated proficiency in all facets of online content production, including writing and AP Style, audio and video production, and photography and photo editing.
- Knowledge of SEO principles and best practices.
