JOB TITLE: News Project Manager, WFYI’s health desk, Side Effects Public Media, and education desk

    

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, Salaried, Temporary (grant funded assignment), includes benefits package.

 

DESCRIPTION: POSITION: All WFYI news teams report on the public systems meant to serve everyone -- successes, failures, inequities and efforts to mend them.  Our WFYI News Project Manager ensures our health and education teams reach their goals. 

The health team, known as Side Effects Public Media, is an award-winning team and the foundation of a regional public health reporting collaboration. The newly launched education team addresses systemic disparities and methods to improve access to equitable education. Both collaborate with our nationally recognized statewide team, based at WFYI, and report nationally. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Ensure compliance with timelines and deliverables in grant funding agreements for WFYI’s education and health teams. 

    • Monitor fulfillment of dashboard metrics. 

    • Track expenses against budget. 

    • Lead periodic budget review meetings with key internal stakeholders. 

    • Lead as the funder point of contact. 

  • Value, contribute to and sustain WFYI’s commitment to a culture of belonging that sees our culture’s history of power and privilege and seeks to balance that with inclusion of many diverse experiences and perspectives.

  • Work with the news director, the health and education editors, community engagement and the WFYI development team to increase reach and impact. 

    • Point person to WFYI’s marketing and development strategies.

    • Work with editors and news director to support collaborative work locally, statewide, regionally and nationally.  

    • Drive growth by developing a distribution strategy that capitalizes on relationships with traditional media outlets and communities of interest. 

    • Monitor reach and impact using qualitative and quantitative tools.

    • Manage and report findings of the source diversity tracker -- for all beats.

  • Establish, maintain and/or create systems for tracking distribution and impact -- such as Audience Explorer and Google Analytics. 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Significant experience in managing projects, preferably for a public media organization. 

  • Understanding of public media and its journalistic practices. 

  • Strong interest in or experience reporting on equity in public policy.

  • Demonstrated communication skills and commitment to collaborative work. 

  • Background using data to inform strategy and decision-making.

  • Experience running a budget.

  • Knowledge of multi-platform news delivery systems (audio, video, digital, social media) highly desirable. 

  • High energy and passion for growing public media audiences so the service may extend to all.
