Classification:  Full Time, Exempt, Temporary (three-year, grant-funded assignment)

Reporting Relationship:    Reports directly to WFYI News Director; Sarah Neal-Estes

Position Description: All WFYI journalism initiatives investigate the intersections of people and policy, and this Managing Editor will lead WFYI’s newly established education team to uncover, report and aim a spotlight on systemic inequities in Indiana’s public schools. The multi-person team will report outstanding community engagement-driven enterprise journalism locally, statewide, and nationally. WFYI is central Indiana's leading non-commercial media outlet and NPR and PBS station; it has founded, supported, and worked with award-winning local, statewide, regional and national journalism and community engagement initiatives.

Major Responsibilities

• Edit, lead and train reporters to provide multiplatform, enterprise and daily reporting for public media stations.
• Develop coverage plans with the health editor, station news director and managing editor of Indiana’s statewide news collaboration.
• Work with the Health/Education Digital Editor to guide visual reporting for digital stories, maintain consistent AP style and use journalistically consistent and engaging social media practices.

• Direct editorial choices using community engagement to collect input from broad audiences, listens with intention to identify ways in which WFYI may utilize its education-related resources in order give voice to the community, build awareness, and deepen understanding of common themes.
• Conduct oneself with sensitivity toward building strong relationships, provide outstanding leadership and develop talent on the team.
• Value, contribute to and sustain WFYI’s commitment to a culture of belonging that sees our culture’s history of power and privilege and seeks to balance that by including many diverse experiences and perspectives.
• Work with the Project Manager to ensure budgets, deliverables, and funder reporting are timely and accurate, and to contribute language and ideas for promotional and fundraising efforts.
• Strategize with the WFYI News Director to build, assess and refine the broader journalism effort at the station – that includes a regional health reporting team (Side Effects Public Media), the new education team, a statewide news collaboration (IPB News), and the station’s emerging government, business and arts and culture teams.
• Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with NPR News editors and national show editors and pitches stories to those outlets.
• Maintain strong relationships with station partner newsroom managers.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or equivalent work experience required.
• Strong experience in public education policy reporting required.
• A minimum of five years in progressively responsible journalistic or editorial leadership roles – including experience editing and producing audio stories and writing and editing news articles for print/web publication.
• Experience in coaching and leading teams to report through lenses of equity and solutions.
• Experience with social media platforms.
• Experience with community engagement-fueled journalism.
• Ability to excel in a team environment with a high level of personal motivation.
• A passion for WFYI’s public media mission.
